Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day but it can sometimes be forgotten during a hectic morning routine. One way to ensure you’re getting fuelled for your day is by taking a few moments the night before to prepare an easy and healthy breakfast, overnight oats.
Overnight oats are an evolution of muesli; they are a mix of raw oats that are soaked overnight in liquid (lemon water, milk or yogurt) and then served uncooked with fruits or nuts. They have a creamy, pudding-like consistency with a number of benefits. Overnight oats keep you feeling full, they help your body absorb more nutrients and they are heart healthy.
The best part about overnight oats is how quick and easy they can be made; a few simple ingredients and a mason jar is all you need.
Simple Overnight Oats
- 3 cups oats
- Enough milk to cover the oats
- 4 tbsp. maple syrup
- ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
Directions:
Place all the ingredients in a large mason jar or bowl and stir to combine. Place in refrigerator and allow to sit for a minimum of two hours or overnight until all the liquid has been absorbed into the oats. Enjoy on its own or topped with fresh fruit or nuts and an extra sprinkling of cinnamon (if desired).
